WEAVE: a powerful new multi-object spectrograph for the WHT
Abstract
WEAVE is a powerful new multi-object spectrograph being planned for WHT prime focus.
WEAVE will allow simultaneous spectroscopy of up to 1000 objects in a 2-deg field of view, with spectroscopic resolutions 5000 (full wavelength coverage) and 20000 (reduced wavelength coverage).
One of the main science goals is Milky Way archaeology, providing essential ground-based follow-up for ESAs GAIA mission.
Its expected that WEAVE will be used for other ambitious large-scale projects, and we discuss how WHT/WEAVE will complement GTC.
