Josep Samitier

Josep Samitier is head of the Nanobioengineering laboratory at IBEC, Full Professor of Electronics at the University of Barcelona, Coordinator of the Master in Biomedical Engineering (UB-UPC), and President of the Associació Catalana d'Entitats de Recerca (ACER). He is also interim Director of the Spanish node of EIT-Health, the European Institute of Innovation and Technology’s “Knowledge and Innovation Community (KIC)” for healthy living and active ageing.

The main activities of his research group involve the physical and chemical functionalization of materials for the development of new integrated biosensor platforms and “living systems on-a-chip”. The technologies and results obtained in the laboratory are employed mainly in medical applications, ranging from portable devices for Point-of-Care diagnostics to implantable scaffolds for regenerative medicine.

In the last twenty-five years, Prof. Samitier has participated in or coordinated several European and national projects concerning integrated microsystems, and more recently nanobiotechnology devices. He has published more than 300 scientific papers and is co-inventor of four licensed patents, and counts among his honours the 2003 Barcelona City Prize in the field of technology.
