Over 150 people have registered for the “100XCIENCIA” forum which will be held on La Palma from 7th to 9th October
Journalists from the New York Times, the SINC agency, El Pais, and the Südddeutsche Zeitung are among those who will debate themes about science, outreach, and society.
Over 150 people have already registered for the important meeting on science popularization “100XCIENCIA: Communicating Frontier Science” to be held on La Palma between October 7th and 9th, for which there are still some places available. This is a forum where researchers and directors of the 20 Spanish centers who have been awarded the certificate of excellence Severo Ochoa will combine with journalists and specialized professional communicators to take stock of the present situation of science, in both the Spanish and the international contexts. In the Canary Islands the only institution which has merited this distinction is the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canaries (IAC) which is acting as the host institution to this, the first “100XCIENCIA” meeting.
This forum will include a full programme of lectures. As well as the Directors and representatives of each center, who will explain their lines of research, there will also be present the following invited lecturers from the field of science communications: Kenneth Chang, science journalist from the New York Times, Patricia Fenández de Lis, the chief editor for Science and Technology of El País/Materia, Hans J. Nebuert, emeritus president of the European Union of Science Journalists' Associations and Pampa García Molina, coordinator and editor-in-chief of the Service of Information and Science News (SINC).
One of the basic premises of this forum is the idea that the popularization and the dissemination of information on science are essential to any system of R+D+I. For this reason the meeting will be an opportunity to reflect on how science is popularized and how reported at the present time, and the changes which may be needed to keep pace with developments.
Bringing together the representatives of research centers as well as specialized journalists and communicators will be useful as a way of familiarizing the latter with the outstanding new studies and lines of research in Spain, and to support the communications performed by the centers. The encounter is a means of creating links and establishing common communication strategies among the Severo Ochoa research centers coinciding with the year in which the first edition of this award comes to an end. We should remember that this distinction was established by the Spanish Government in 2011 to promote those centers which are notable for the excellence of their research, providing them with specific financing for a period of four years to help boost their research levels.
In “100XCIENCIA” the debate will be fostered via four panel discussions with the participation of communicators and science journalists of recognized prestige, together with scientists from the Severo Ochoa centers, and representatives of politicians who are related to science. The themes for debate at the panel discussions will be “Science and the Challenges of the XXI Century”, “The Politics of Science”, “ Impact and outreach in Society”, and “Science in the media”.
In the framework of this meeting there will also be a series of lectures for the general public. These will be “Diabetes” by Joan Guinovart, of the Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB), Barcelona, and “Taking Decisions” by Luis Martinez Ortero, of the Institute for Neurosciences (IN) , which will take place on Wednesday, October 7th at the end of the programme for that day in the Circo de Marte Theatre, in Santa Cruz de La Palma. Researchers from several Severo Ochoa centers will give lectures to school students in Santa Cruz and in Los Llanos de Aridane on October 9th.
“100xCiencia” is organized by the 20 Severo Ochoa centers of excellence currently recognized by the Ministry of Economy and Competitivity (MINECO), with the collaboration of the Cabildo Insular of La Palma, and the City Council of Santa Cruz de La Palma, and with patronage by the Banco de Santander and Telefónica. This is the first coordinated effort in the field of communication by these research centers, with the aim of creating more permanent collaboration to optimizer their efforts in communication and outreach.
