Joan Guinovart

Joan J. Guinovart is Director of IRB Barcelona and Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Barcelona. His research focuses on glycogen metabolism, with special attention to the study of the alterations in carbohydrate metabolism in diabetes and Lafora disease. He has mentored more than 40 graduate students and postdocs and published over 150 scientific articles. Prof. Guinovart has received numerous recognitions for his contributions to science as well as to science advocacy at the national and international levels. He is a full member of the Spanish Royal Academy, a member of the Academia Europaea, FEBS Diplôme d’honneur, and recipient of the Saint George’s Cross, the highest distinction from the Government of Catalonia. He is former president of the Confederation of Spanish Scientific Societies (COSCE), and of the Spanish National Committee of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (SEBBM), and is currently president-elect to the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB).
