Relative distributuions of cosmic ray electrons and magnetic fields in the ISM
Abstract
We calculate the relative magnitude of fluctuations in total synchrotron intensity in the Milky Way, both from observations and from theory under various assumption about the relation between cosmic rays and interstellar magnetic fields. From the relative magnitude of the fluctuations in the Galactic magnetic field suggested by the Faraday rotation data, we calculate the level of fluctuations in the energy density of cosmic ray electrons. The results are inconsistent with the local energy equipartition between cosmic rays and magnetic fields and indicate that the distribution of cosmic rays is rather uniform at scales of order 1 kpc, in contrast to that of the interstellar magnetic field. From theoretical arguments, we argue that equipartition may still hold but at scales exceeding 1 kpc.
