The question whether the large scale magnetic fields in galaxies
and clusters have been generated by the amplification of seed
fields or whether they are do to an 'inverse cascade' of small
scale fields is still unsolved. In this talk I shall describe
the constraints on primoridal seed fields, which can be derived
from their interaction with the cosmic microwave background and
from the production of gravitational waves by such fields.
