Abstract details

We discuss evidence from colors and deep optical-NIR number counts which point to z~1.5 as the epoch for a major buildup of the galaxy red sequence. This corresponds to a characteristic age for field early types of ~9 Gyr. We also present evidence from HST-derived colors that the red sequence aty z=0.4-0.9 is associated to brightness profiles more concentrated than exponential.
