This is the Second Announcement of the 11th Cambridge Workshop on Cool Stars, Stellar Systems and the Sun, to be held in the Conference Centre at Puerto de la Cruz in Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain) from October 4th - 8th, 1999. The meeting is organized by the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC), which hosts the two international observatories located in the Canary Islands (Roque de los Muchachos Observatory at La Palma, and Teide Observatory at Tenerife).

The Cool Stars Workshops are designed to provide a regular forum where members of the solar and stellar communities can get together to discuss new observations and theoretical models and, in particular, to attempt to correlate the very detailed observations we have for the Sun with the vast, but less detailed database of observations of more distant stars. Cool Stars 11 will continue that tradition. We expect this to be a very lively meeting, with more than 350 participants pre-registered so far. The emphasis will be on identifying the challenges and unsolved problems in the physics of late-type stars for the future. Note that this will be the last Cool Stars Workshop of the millennium and it will be a good opportunity to review some of the fields frequently considered in these workshops.

CONTRIBUTIONS UP

All participants who wish to present a contribution to this Workshop are kindly requested to submit an abstract of their talk(s)/poster(s) before July 10. You can do this by filling in this web form. A copy of this latex file is also available here or upon request to cs11@ll.iac.es. Participants will receive a booklet containing the abstracts of all the contributions that arrived on time at the conference desk. We would appreciate you not exceeding 15-20 lines per abstract.

For display of posters during the whole duration of the Workshop there will be a sufficient number of panels available in a room adjacent to the conference hall. For reasons of space, we have a limit of 400 posters at this Workshop.

CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS
We intend to reach an agreement for the conference proceedings to be published in the form of a dedicated volume with The Astronomical Society of the Pacific Conference Series. They will be offered to all participants as part of the registration fee. Only invited reviews, talks and discussion sessions will be contained in this volume. Contributed posters will be published in a CD-Rom which will be delivered along with the book. This system of publication was used successfully in the previous Cool Stars, Stellar System and the Sun Workshop (CS10), and we believe it is an excellent idea. Details on the preparation of manuscripts for the proceedings will be given in the final announcement (end of July, 1999) or during the Workshop. In any case, instructions and the materials needed for the preparation of manuscripts will be available at the Workshop Web pages before October, 1999.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE UP

Regretfully, the LOC has limited funds and is unable to offer widespread financial assistance. There are a limited number of accommodation grants for students on low budgets and participants coming from less developed regions who explicitly indicate that they need financial assistance to attend. Participants awarded these will be expected to stay in one of the apartments (please see section on Accommodation). No travel or subsistence grants are available. Once the accommodation grant is awarded, participants should request their booking with the travel agent, specifying that they are grant holders.

Free registration can be available under request for researchers from less developed regions.

REGISTRATION FEE UP

Potential participants may register using this Web page before July 10, 1999. Even if you have pre-registered you are kindly requested to complete a registration form to confirm your attendance. We would appreciate you sending us the abstracts of your contributions at the same time.

Full registration fee is 40,000 Pesetas (~240 Euros, ~$US 280). Early registration fee (before July 10) is 30,000 Pesetas (~180 Euros, ~ $US 210). This will cover workshop attendance, coffee breaks, welcome cocktail and a copy of the Proceedings. Graduate students will be given a reduction of their early registration fee (down to 20,000 Pesetas; ~120 Euros, ~$US 140) upon request (a simple e-mail will do). The fee is to be paid in Pesetas by bank transfer to:

ACCOMMODATION INFORMATION UP

Our travel agent has negotiated reduced prices for a set of hotels close to the conference centre. You are strongly recommended to book accommodation as early as possible. After August 15 there is no guarantee that there will be room and reduced prices in the hotels close to the conference centre, and our travel agent will try to fit people in hotels somewhere in Puerto de la Cruz.

The following offer of hotel places is available. The prices are confirmed rates for conference participants, through the travel agent. If you contact the hotel directly you will be quoted a higher rate. All prices are in Pesetas and per person. They include all local taxes and there are no hidden extras in the bill. You will only need to make an additional payment for room service, for extra meals/drinks and for telephone calls. The current exchange rate is approximately $US 1 = 140 Pesetas (1 Euro= 166.386 Pesetas).

A limited number of places will be arranged in cheaper apartments for participants on low budgets and receiving grants from LOC to attend the conference. If you wish to be booked in one of these, please say so on the hotel booking form and you will receive a confirmation from the travel agents as to name and location of your apartment. Please note that the apartments available are for sharing between two or three people (the more, the cheaper), sharing bedroom and bathroom, with a sofa bed for a third person. They are adequate for small families, as they are equipped with cooking facilities. The apartments, located around the Botanical Gardens area, are typically 30 minutes walking distance from the conference centre, but taxis are relatively cheap (about 100 Pesetas per person each way if shared by four persons).

TRAVEL INFORMATION UP

The Canary Islands may seem remote from Europe, but there is an abundance of charter flights as well as scheduled flights operating several times daily from most Spanish and European cities. Tenerife is regularly connected to 16 foreign airports and has direct charter flights with more than 112 foreign cities.

There are daily flights connecting different American locations and Madrid, which are easily linked to Tenerife via Iberia or other Spanish regular airlines (in a 2.5 hour flight). Trans-oceanic flights are served by Spanish (Iberia, Air Europa) and American (Delta, Continental, TWA, American) airlines and cost typically between less than 1,000 to 1,400 US dollars (including the Madrid-Tenerife trip) depending on the departure location and the special offers.

On the other hand, given that Tenerife is very well connected with other European gateways, like Frankfurt or London, it is also possible to organise trips through these locations and benefit from cheaper prices.

There are two airports on the island of Tenerife, one on the north side (Tenerife Norte, TFN, also known as "Aeropuerto de Los Rodeos") and the other one on the south of the island (Tenerife Sur, TFS, also known as "Aeropuerto Reina Sofia"). Both airports are at about 2.5 hours flying time from Madrid, and about 3 hours from Barcelona in the mainland. Both have good connections for ground transportation.

Puerto de la Cruz lies 35 km from Los Rodeos airport (TFN), and 100 km the Reina Sofia airport (TFS), with a motorway link covering the full journey in both cases. The easiest access to Puerto de la Cruz is from the northern airport (TFN) along the TF-5 motorway. This is an approximately 20 to 30 minute journey along the coast. The South Airport (TFS) is more than an hour away along the TF-1 and then TF-5 motorways.

All international flights and some domestic flights go to the Tenerife South Airport (TFS). On the other hand, most domestic flights go to Tenerife North Airport (TFN). Most people travelling on scheduled flights will have to fly via Madrid or Barcelona and then on to the northern airport. Three airlines fly scheduled flights in from the Spanish mainland: Iberia, Air Europa and Spanair. The strong competition between them has substantially lowered the airfares to the Canaries in the past years.

Scheduled flights from Madrid and Barcelona to Tenerife as well as charter flights from some European countries can be heavily booked at certain times of the year, so you should ensure that you make your reservation as far in advance as possible. Online information about flights arriving at or departing from Madrid, Barcelona and Tenerife South (TFS) and North (TFN) airports can be obtained here. As an example for other itineraries, online information of flights connecting Frankfurt and Tenerife can be consulted here or here.

GETTING TO YOUR HOTEL (local transport)
Unfortunately the Workshop will not be able to provide transportation from any of the airports to the conference site and viceversa. Below we give information about transport in Tenerife. Transport on the island relies mainly on public transportation (buses) and taxis. Buses run frequently and cheaply, and taxis are also inexpensive compared to European standards. Hire cars are also available at fairly cheap rates.

***) IF YOU ARE ARRIVING AT TENERIFE NORTH AIRPORT (TFN-Los Rodeos):
Buses for Puerto de la Cruz leave every 30 min (line 102, coming from the terminal in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and stopping at the airport 20 or 30 min after departure from Santa Cruz). TFN-Puerto de la Cruz main bus station trip costs about 375 pesetas. A taxi will cost about 4,000 pesetas.

The local bus company is called TITSA (buses are painted bright green), and the local name for the bus is "guagua" or "autobús". There is a telephone number (+34 922 531 300) where you can find more information (24 hours of information in both languages: English and Spanish).

***) IF YOU ARE ARRIVING AT TENERIFE SOUTH AIRPORT (TFS-Reina Sofia):
You can either catch a taxi (about 10,000 pesetas), or a bus. Bus services are as follows:

- TFS to Puerto de la Cruz (line 340, direct service).
  Departure times: 9:45, 14:00, 20:00 and 23:00.
Price of one way ticket: 1,075 pesetas.

- TFS to Santa Cruz de Tenerife main bus terminal
  (line 341, direct). Departure times: 06:50, 07:50, 08:50,
  09:30, 10:30, 11:30, 12:10, 13:10, 14:10, 14:50, 15:50,
  16:50, 17:30, 18:30, 19:30, 20:10, 21:10, 22:10, 22:50,
23:45 and 1:30. Price of one way ticket: 690 pesetas.

- Santa Cruz de Tenerife main bus terminal to Puerto de
la Cruz (line 102, direct service). Departure times:
every 30 min until 21:15. Additionally, two more services
  operate at 22:30 and 24:00.
Price of one way ticket: 470 pesetas.

NOTE: There is still an uphill stretch from the bus terminal in Puerto de la Cruz to the hotels which are close to the conference venue, and for this reason we recommend a taxi (either from the airports, or from the bus terminal in Puerto de la Cruz). A taxi from the main bus terminal in Puerto de la Cruz to the hotels will cost about 500 pesetas.

We recommend that participants share taxis in order to make the price/service more competitive than transportation by bus.

CHANGING MONEY UP

There is a bank within the international arrivals lounge at the Tenerife South Airport (Reina Sofia, TFS), which operates from Monday to Friday from 8:30h to 13:30h and an exchange desk available typically from 7:00h to 24:00h. Currency exchange facilities are also available at Tenerife North Airport (Los Rodeos, TFN). A Bank desk opens from Monday to Friday from 08:30h to 13:30h, and an exchange desk is available from 10:00h to 14:00h and from 18:00h to 22:00h. If you are travelling through Madrid or Barcelona the exchange bureau opens round the clock.

Many banks are available in Puerto de la Cruz, and open Monday to Friday from 9:00h to 13:00h. The current exchange rate is about 140 pesetas per US dollar, and 166.386 pesetas per Euro. Credit cards are widely accepted in Spain (restaurants, hotels, etc.). VISA and MASTERCARD only will be accepted at the conference desk.

ATM or cash dispensers cater for a variety of cards for instant cash: VISA, Mastercard, Cirrus, Maestro, AMEX, among others. There is a small charge involved (approx. 4%).

SOCIAL EVENTS AND TRIPS UP

There will be a number of social events and also the possibility to participate in tours. The following is a first approximation to the social activities that we intend to include within the conference timetable. In some cases the cost depends on negotiations with local authorities which are still not finalised. Our aim is to promote a friendly atmosphere, in which participants will have as many chances as possible to get to know each other away from the formality of the conference hall.

Sunday, October 3, 1999 Registration and welcome cocktail

                             Muchachos Observatory
			     (20,000 Pesetas)

NOTE: prices are per person.

Due to logistic constraints, no more than 150 persons can attend the visit to the Teide National Park and Teide Observatory in the same day. The visit on Wednesday Oct. 6 is already fully booked (July 29), and the LOC can only accept more requests for visiting this Observatory on Saturday Oct. 9. More information on the Conference Banquet and the excursions to both Observatories, and other possible activities, will be released with following announcements. You can send your request for the social events to the LOC by filling in our web registration form.

We are trying to organise other social events within the conference programme. Our travel agent will be providing leisure activities for accompanying persons. Tourist packages can also be obtained from our travel agent for visits to neighbouring islands or mainland Spain, before and/or after the conference.

Full day trip to the island of La Palma
Departure early morning by plane, evening return to Tenerife on the last flight. La Palma is 150 km away, just half an hour by air. Participants are invited to join a trip to the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos (ORM), the international observatory located on the neighbouring Island of La Palma (Isla Bonita or Isla Verde), on Saturday October 9th. The cost of the trip is 20,000 pesetas per person, which includes a return flight from TFN to La Palma, transport to and from your hotel and a snack at the Observatory. Other expenses, such as transport on the Island and lunch, are being met jointly by the conference organisers and the local Tourist board.

For logistic reasons, there is a maximum limit of 100 participants for this particular trip.

The Island of La Palma lies NW of the archipielago. With an extension of 728 square km, it is the island with the highest peaks in the world in relation to its surface area. The Roque de los Muchachos peak reaches an altitude of 2,426 m, and hosts the observatory bearing its name. One of the most impressive scenes is the Caldera de Taburiente (a national park), which is a depression adjacent to the Roque de los Muchachos 9000 m in diameter, 800 m deep and with a circumference of 28,000 m.

The preliminary programme is as follows:

06:30h	Bus leaves hotels in Puerto de la Cruz
07:30h	Departure from Tenerife North Airport (TFN)
08:00h	Arrival at La Palma
08:30h	Departure from La Palma Airport, and transfer to the ORM
10:00h	Arrival at the ORM
10:30h	Observatory tour and snack
14:30h	Departure ORM and transfer to restaurant for late lunch
17:00h	Visit to the capital, Santa Cruz de La Palma
18:00h	Transfer to airport for return flight at 19:00
20:30h	Arrival at hotels in Puerto de la Cruz

WEATHER AND CLIMATE UP

The weather in October is usually comfortably warm at the sea level. Please make sure that you have some warm clothing as cool evenings are possible at this time of the year. If you are planning to visit any of the observatories, it is also recommended some warm clothes, as it could be rather cool up in the mountain, and comfortable shoes.

Puerto de la Cruz is on the north coast of the island of Tenerife and is dominated by the 3,718 m peak of Teide to the south. There is a maritime climate which means that the temperature and weather on the coast can be warm and pleasant even for bathing.

ABOUT PUERTO DE LA CRUZ UP

The Conference will be held in Puerto de la Cruz, a 27,500 pop. sea-side resort on the northern coast of the Island of Tenerife, and about 42 km from the capital city, Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Located at a latitude = +28 deg and at a longitude = 15 deg W, the Spanish Islas Canarias consist of a volcanic archipelago (in the Atlantic Ocean) made up of 7 large islands and 6 islets, with a total of 1,605,000 inhabitants. The nearest island is 108 km off the Northwest African mainland, in contrast with the maximum distance within the archipelago which is 485 km. Geographically, the islands are part of the African continent but from a historical, economical, political and sociocultural point of view, the Canaries are completely European.

The town centre and the seafront are an easy walk away from the hotels and the conference centre, although the return journey, uphill, requires a minimum level of fitness. Taxis are quite cheap (there is a standard minimum urban tariff of 300 pesetas, ~ $US 2).

Puerto de la Cruz is the main tourist centre of the north of the island, catering for "quality tourism". The mild climate and international nature of the town make it a popular place for foreigners to settle and many people come to the area to retire. This gives Puerto de la Cruz a very international atmosphere with a very active night life.

Restaurants can be found that cater for many types of international cuisine and it is easy to find places with their menus in many foreign languages apart from the ubiquitous Spanish, English and German; these include Swedish, Finnish,Danish, French, Dutch, Russian and Italian. A list of recommended restaurants will be provided in your conference folder.

There are facilities of all kinds in the town for visitors and their families, including a small port (used by fishing vessels). There are a few sandy beaches (black sand) and a large complex of chlorinated and salt-water pools for swimming, the Lago Martianez.

Like all places in Tenerife, when you move even slightly away from the coast there are many steep slopes. If you have health or mobility problems you should bear this in mind and be ready to make use of taxis or rent a cars where possible.

Attractions include Loro Parque, a fascinating centre which combines a park, a zoo, a large bird collection and some spectacular aquaria; the XVIII century Botanic Garden; and the sea-front area. Close to Puerto is La Orotava with its special architecture and famous old Canarian-style houses.

There is good bus (called Guagua in the Canaries) transport between Puerto de la Cruz and many other points, especially the main towns of La Laguna (where the IAC headquarters are) and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the island's capital. A bus time-table will be included in your conference folder.
