Getting to La Palma (flight information)

The meeting will take place in the island of La Palma (Canary Islands, Spain). When booking your flights choose La Palma (airport code SPC) as your destination. Don't get confused by Las Palmas (LPA), capital of the island of Gran Canaria, or Palma de Mallorca (PMI) which is rather far away!

Please book your flights early! Scheduled flights as well as charter flights from some European countries can be heavily booked as the Canary Islands are a popular touristic destination.

Online information about flights arriving at or departing from the Spanish airports is obtained at the official Aena page.

Some more detailed notes:

There is a daily direct flight to La Palma (SPC) from Madrid (MAD) with Iberia, part of the Oneworld alliance. If you can connect to that, perfect. There are also direct flights to SPC from Barcelona (BCN) in Spain, and from the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, and the UK but these flights are not daily and are usually operated by low-cost airlines.

Most visitors fly to Tenerife or Gran Canaria and then take an inter-island flight to La Palma (best views on these flights to La Palma are on the left, to see Tenerife, La Gomera, El Hierro if the weather is good, and finally La Palma on the final approach to land). Tenerife has two airports. Los Rodeos or Tenerife Norte (TFN) is near La Laguna and Santa Cruz and serves mostly domestic flights, with many flights daily from MAD and BCN. From TFN there are very frequent flights to La Palma SPC with two airlines: Binter (sometimes code-sharing with Iberia but watch the price) and CanaryFly (which sometimes codeshares with Air Europa, which is part of the Skyteam alliance). Tenerife Sur (TFS) has many flights from all kind of places in Europe, including some in the East like Poland and Czech Republic, but only two flights per day (with Binter) to La Palma. From TFS, your alternatives include taking a bus (or taxi, over 100 euros) to TFN airport, or a bus or taxi (maybe 40 euros) to the port of Los Cristianos and take a ferry to La Palma from there, with Armas or Fred Olsen. The ferries arrive in the port of Santa Cruz de La Palma, from where you can walk to take bus 500, or take a taxi (10 euros or so) to the hotel.

You can also fly in to Gran Canaria (LPA) which like TFS is a major airport with 100's of destinations. There are reasonably frequent direct flights to La Palma SPC from LPA, or you can take a connecting inter-island flight via TFN. Or go with Fred Olsen of course, one ticket can get you on two buses (Las Palmas to Agaete and Santa Cruz de Tenerife to Los Cristianos) and two ferries. All you'd need to do separately is take the half-hourly bus from LPA airport to Las Palmas - Parque Santa Catalina!

As usual, travel sites like google maps, skyscanner.com, rome2rio.com or local ones such as titsa.com, bintercanarias.com or canaryfly.com are your companions.

From the US:

United operates a direct flight from Newark to Tenerife South (TFS), Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday (with return direct TFS-EWR on Wed, Fri, Sun). What works for the conference would be leaving Newark evening Sat 14 Sept, arriving morning of Sunday 15 Sep in TFS, and returning Sunday 22 Sep from TFS, direct to Newark. See above for how to go from TFS to La Palma and back.
