Outline of the school

The XXXIV Canary Islands Winter School is addressed to advanced MSc students, PhD students and early career postdocs interested in the formation and the evolution of galaxies, and in particular of the Local Group, with either an observational or theoretical background.

Main lectures on a wide selection of topics will be given by renowned specialists in the field:
  • Teresa Antoja (ICCUB, Barcelona): Dynamical overview of the Milky Way disc.
  • Christopher Brook (ULL/IAC, Tenerife): Overview of Cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of the Local Group.
  • Cristina Chiappini (AIP, Postdam):  Chemical overview of the Milky Way disc.
  • Alis Deason (ICC/CEA, Durham): The stellar halo and the early phases of the Milky Way formation.
  • Alan McConnachie (HAA, Victoria B.C.): Overview of the Andromeda galaxy system.

They will be complemented by a series of focused talks on specific topics:
  • Giuseppina Battaglia (IAC, Tenerife): Chemo-dynamical properties of dwarf galaxies. WEAVE.
  • Santi Cassisi (INAF, Abruzzo): Stellar evolution theory. Globular clusters.
  • Carme Gallart (IAC, Tenerife): Star formation history derivation in the Local Group.
  • Savita Mathur (IAC, Tenerife): Asteroseismology.
  • Matteo Monelli (IAC, Tenerife): Variable stars.

In addition, these lectures will be complemented by a series of hands-on sessions organized by:
  • Robert Grand (LJMU, Liverpool): Analysing hydrodynamical simulations.
  • Emma Fernández Alvar (ULL/IAC, Tenerife): Analysing spectroscopical data.
  • Alejandra Recio Blanco (OCA, Nice): Analysing Gaia data.
  • Guillaume Thomas (IAC, Tenerife): Measuring stellar distance with Machine Learning. Orbits determination.

The Winter School will take place in San Cristóbal de La Laguna (Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain) from Wednesday, November 8th to Wednesday, November 15th 2023. The lectures (in English) will take place during the working days and will all be 45-mins long + 15-mins of discussion. The majority of them will take place during the morning and the early afternoon. The hands-on sessions will take place during the afternoons. Links to the material used by the lecturers, as well as videos of the lectures, will be made available on the website of the school. Visits to the Teide Observatory in Tenerife will be scheduled as part of the activities. A visit to the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory in La Palma will be offered optionally on Thursday November 16th.

Those interested in attending the school should apply following the instructions provided in the application page by Friday July 14th 2023. Selected candidates will be informed before July 31st 2023.
