Outline of the School

The primary aim of the XXIV Winter School is to provide a wide-ranging and up-to-date overview of different aspects of gravitational lensing and its application to several fields of Astrophysics (Dark Matter, Galaxies structure, Quasar accretion disks, Exoplanets, etc) and Cosmology. The School is particularly designed to introduce young researchers to the use of gravitational lenses as a tool in their current work.

Giant, almost complete ring (Horseshoe lens)

To achieve such a goal, the Winter School lectures will be given by eight eminent and experienced scientists who are actively working on a variety of forefront research projects, and who have played a key role in major advances over the recent years. The list of lecturers includes noted theoreticians and observers in each area of the subject. The format of the School will also encourage direct interaction between the participating students and lecturers. Two tutorials about lens and microlensing modeling are included in the course.

The school is primarily intended for doctoral students and recent postdocs in any field of research in Astronomy. Participants of the Winter School will have the opportunity to display their current work by presenting a poster contribution.

The Winter School will take place at Puerto de la Cruz (Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain), from November 4th to 16th, 2012. The lectures will be delivered in English and will be published by Cambridge University Press in a dedicated monograph. Speakers will present their topics in a series of four lectures. Visits to the IAC's Headquarter in La Laguna, the Teide Observatory in Tenerife and the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory in La Palma will be scheduled as part of the activities.

The standard registration fee is Euro 1500.-, which covers the Conference Fee, half-board accommodation for thirteen days (from Sunday 4th to Saturday 17th, on the basis of shared rooms), all excursions and social activities including visits to the observatories on La Palma and Tenerife, and a copy of the proceedings. Limited financial support may be available.

Those interested in attending the Winter School should register following the instructions provided in the Registration page. Once registered, please login to the personal area of the website and complete the required information. In addition we request a letter of reference from a thesis advisor, or Head of Department, by email to winter@iac.es. These should reach the IAC before June 15th. Selected candidates will be informed by July 1st.
