Modeling flux emergence as the driver of coronal mass ejections

Abstract

Some of the current suuggested models for the initiation of Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) rely on the emergence of magetic flux from beneath the surface. However at present, these models use time-dependent boundary conditions which pescribe certain aspects of flux emergence, such as shear flows or electic fields, rather than dynamically evolving sub-surface fields into the atmosphere. We present results from numreical investigations designed to determine whether dynamic flux emergence into pre-existing coronal field can initiate CMEs and reproduce the observable signatures of these events.
