Probing Multiscale Dynamical Systems with Solar Flare Observations
Siming Liu & Lyndsay Fletcher

Abstract

Solar flares are a multiscale phenomenon. This is evident not only from the fact that the size of flares (in terms of energy, duration, and volume) can vary by many orders of magnitude, but also from the fact that hard X-ray light-curves of some flares have features on almost all timescales from instrument resolution up to the duration of the events, reflecting the multi-scale nature of the energy release and particle acceleration processes. At least two multiscale dynamical systems can be identified. One concerns primarily the energy accumulation and release, the other the consequence of the energy release in the dynamical environment of solar atmosphere. The two systems are coupled through a varieties of instabilities, which trigger enhanced conversion of energies into observed particles and emissions.
