                     "LOCAL GROUP, LOCAL COSMOLOGY"

               Symposium V - July 8/9, 2013, Turku, Finland
European Week of Astronomy and Space Science
                  http://research.iac.es/congreso/local2013/

The Local Group is the crossroads of a huge observational effort, which
is constantly increasing our knowledge of the kinematic properties,
star formation histories, and chemical evolution of nearby systems.
A careful comparison between these empirical data and the predictions
of cosmological models represents a crucial step towards a deeper
understanding of the entire galaxy formation process, which includes
the origin of the first cosmic objects. Local Cosmology is providing
fruitful links with the high-redshift Universe, which can be tested
by using the observations of more distant systems.

Starting from the variety of Local Group observations the Symposium
aims to analyze the formation of nearby galaxies in a cosmological
context, to discuss the observed properties of galaxies through the
cosmic time, and to explore the opportunities of future instruments
in linking the Local and the high-redshift Universe. In order to
build-up a lively dialog among the complementary astronomical
communities we are inviting international experts of different fields,
and we are proposing a transverse program, which juxtaposes Local and
high-redshift observations, besides observers and theoreticians.

We encourage all the participants who wish to present an oral or a
poster contribution in this Symposium to submit their abstract via
the central Abstracts page of EWASS 2013
 http://www.astro.utu.fi/EWASS2013/abstracts.php

The registration to EWASS 2013 is now open, while the abstract
submission is expect to start at the beginning of March.

The topics that will be covered in the Symposium include:
--------------------------------------------------------
- The Local Group: kinematics, mass and global properties of nearby galaxies
- Star formation through the cosmic time: observations vs theory
- Chemical abundances through the cosmic time: observations vs theory
- Future observations: E-ELT, JWST and GAIA
