Social Activities and Events
No conference is complete without its social events. We are arranging various
for conference delegates so that they can enjoy their stay in Girona to the
full and have plenty of relaxed time to talk with their friends and collegues
in a pleasant atmosphere. Most of these events will be free, or heavily
subsidised by our hosts (the local and regional government of the city and
province of Girona). We invite you to take advantage.
Some of these plans may change slightly between now and the date of the
conference, but the list of events is pretty definitive now.

Sunday September 8th: Welcome cocktail and hors d'oeuvres (free). 7-9pm.
A short illustrated talk will be given during the cocktail by a local
historian, who will make suggestions about places to visit and things to
see during your stay and talk a little about the history of the city.

Monday September 9th: Evening tour of Girona in the "Girona Mini-train" (free). 1 hour tour.
This tour, which would normally take some 3 hours on foot, will take us round
the city and its ancient streets. Various stops will be made to visit the
cathedral and its famous (and very long) steps, the city walls (which offer
a fine view of the city and its surroundings from well above the roof-tops;
those immune to vertigo can climb up the towers on the walls, to get an even
better view) and other sights in the heart of the city. The guides will give
the tour in various languages.

Tuesday September 10th: Public lecture by Prof Francisco
Sanchez on the International Observatories or the Canary Islands and
the 10m telescope which is to be installed in La Palma
(free). 7:30-9pm
This will be followed by a public observing session in which local amateurs
will show the general public the sky through their telescopes.

Wednesday September 11th: Conference dinner ~ 2500 Ptas and concert/show (free)
This is the "Day of Catalonia", or "National Day of Catalonia" (as many
catalans prefer to call it). The conference dinner at a hotel just outside
the city will be followed by a concert/show selected from the many activities
that are held to celebrate this public holiday in Catalonia. You may attend
the concert/show even if you do not attend the dinner and we would urge you to
find time for both.

Friday September 12th: Tour of the province ~ 1000 Ptas
This full day tour will include lunch at a stop along the way and a visit to
the Pyrenees which separate Spain from France, passing through the countryside
of the Province of Girona.
