Optional visit to the Observatorio Roque de los Muchachos - La Palma

An optional visit to the Observatorio Roque de los Muchachos (ORM), on the island of La Palma, is planned for Saturday, 21 November. The visit will be limited to approximately 30 participants, with places allocated according to the order of registration and fee payment. The estimated cost is still to be confirmed and will depend on the final number of participants, but it is usually around 350 €.

The trip will include:

  • Return flights between Tenerife and La Palma
  • Bus transfers in La Palma
  • Coffee break, lunch and snacks
  • A general visit to the Observatorio Roque de los Muchachos and a stop at the Roque de los Muchachos viewpoint
  • Guided visits to three of its main telescopes and facilities: the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC), MAGIC / CTA-LST, and the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG)

The approximate schedule is:

  • Departure from Tenerife: 08:00
  • Return to Tenerife: 18:00

The Observatorio Roque de los Muchachos is one of the most important astronomical sites in the world, located at an altitude of about 2,400 m on the edge of the Caldera de Taburiente National Park. During the visit, participants will have the opportunity to explore the observatory site and learn about several frontline astronomical facilities. These include the Gran Telescopio Canarias, currently the largest optical-infrared telescope in the world, with an equivalent primary mirror diameter of 10.4 m; the MAGIC telescopes and CTA-LST, dedicated to the study of very-high-energy gamma rays; and the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo, the largest Italian optical-infrared telescope.

Please note that the final programme may be adjusted depending on weather conditions, telescope operations, and logistical constraints.
