A multipolar analysis of binary-black hole inspiral and merger
Ulrich Sperhake

Abstract

Purpose of this talk is to investigate in detail the inspiral and merger waveforms resulting from the inspiral and coalescence of black hole binaries. Particular focus will be on the impact of mass ratios and spins on the relative strength of different multipoles in the radiation. The ring-down of the post-merger black hole is studied, also in the context of a comparison with perturbation theory, and the significance of the ring-down as a diagnostic tool in gravitational wave physics will be discussed.
