General Information

The Euroconference will be held in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, a seaside tourist resort some 40 Km from Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the islands capital; 35 Km from Los Rodeos airport (known as Tenerife Norte, or TFN), and 100 km from the main international Reina Sofía airport (known as Tenerife Sur, or TFS). Both airports are at about 2.5 hrs flying time from Madrid. TFN deals mostly with domestic flights while TFS connects Tenerife with a number of European cities, and other parts of the world.

Tenerife, with its climate moderated by the Atlantic, is a scenic island where old, colonial-style cities and attractive tourist towns mingle with a great variety of vegetation and landscapes. The climate in the coast is warm during April and suitable for bathing, with temperatures in the range 24 to 28 C during the day, and 18 to 22 C at night. Temperatures may drop slightly below this, however, when moving towards the inner regions of the Island. By contrast, the Pico del Teide (3.700 m) may be covered in snow at that time of the year. Participants should bear this in mind, since a tour of the Observatorio del Teide, and the National park, is planned as one of the outdoor activities. The scenery and climate of Tenerife pack immense variety into a small space, as might be imagined for a volcanic island reaching nearly 4.000 m in altitude on the edge of the tropics.

The Euroconference will take place in the new conference center of the Cabildo Insular de Tenerife, the local Authority in the Island. This conference center is within walking distance from the hotel where all the participants will be staying (see map). Both the hotel and the conference center are surrounded by quiet, beautiful gardens, overlooking the town center.

How to get to the Hotel

If you are arriving at TFS airport, you can either catch a taxi (9.500 pesetas) or a bus. A direct bus service (line 340) leaves the airport at 9:45, 14:00, 20:00 and 23:30 (1.035 pesetas). If the times are not right for you, you can catch bus 341 to the main bus terminal in Santa Cruz, and then change over to bus 102 which will take you straight into Puerto de la Cruz. Bus 341 leaves the airport in conjunction with Iberia arrivals. Bus 102 departs the bus terminal in Santa Cruz every 30 min until 9:15 pm. Additionally, two more services to Puerto de la Cruz operate at 22:30 and 24 hours. There's still an uphill stretch from the bus terminal in Puerto de la Cruz to the hotel, and for this we recommend a taxi.

If you arrive at TFN (Los Rodeos), there are buses to Puerto de la Cruz every 30 min. (line 102, coming from the terminal in Santa Cruz) costing 470 pesetas. A taxi would cost 2.500 pesetas.

If you are travelling through Madrid there is a bank open 24 hrs. in Madrid airport. Many banks are of course available in El Puerto de la Cruz, which are open Monday to Friday from 08:30 to 14:00 hrs. The current exchange rate is around 160 Pesetas per ECU, and 124 pts per US dollar. Credit cards are widely accepted in Spain, although not at the school desk!

Trips and diversions

  1. On Tuesday evening, April 23rd, a welcome reception will be held at the Hotel.

  2. On Saturday April 27th we plan a whole day excursion to Teide Observatory (2400 m of altitude), one of the two international Observatory complexes operated by the IAC, and the nearby Teide National Park, a volcanic area of natural beauty in the central zone of the island of Tenerife. The weather near Pico del Teide is unsafe to predict during April, being most common nice sunny days even when rain must not be excluded. Day time temperatures up the mountain may be quite low (10-15 C). We recommend warm clothing. All Euroconference participants are invited to join this visit, which will include a meal.

  3. On Sunday 28th April we are organizing an optional excursion to the neighbouring island of La Palma, including a visit to the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos (ORM), on the rim of the scenic Caldera de Taburiente (a National Park). At the ORM we will show you around several telescopes. You will be able to examine closely some of the astronomical instruments that have made the WHT one of the best performming telescopes in the world. If you are taking this trip to the ORM in La Palma, a nominal fee of around Pts 10000 will be charged, at the time of registration, covering a fraction of the cost. However, due to heavy flight bookings around those dates, we must arrange tickets promptly. So please book NOW on the registration form if you are interested in this excursion.

  4. The Euroconference will have its official end with a closing dinner on Thursday 25th.
